About the Project
This community project aims to collect and store the memories, stories and experiences of Barrow’s Shipyard Women. From the offices to the munitions sheds, women that were called to war work at the Vickers-Armstrong Shipyard in Barrow, really rose to the occasion.

Local members of the Barrow in Furness community have shared the stories of their mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and great-grandparents as part of this community project in celebration of the women’s wartime effort.
Working in the same conditions, and on the same tasks as the skilled professional men (but for less pay!) the women’s wartime workforce was vital to the war effort. So we would like to celebrate their contribution, not just with this digital collection, but eventually with a physical exhibition or lasting tribute to Barrow’s Shipyard Women of WWII.
